PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

Dear Parents and Guardians:

Welcome to Berylwood Elementary School! Our school is a community made up of students, parents and teachers dedicated to the social and academic growth of all students. Working as partners, we can accomplish what neither of us can alone, so we invite you to actively join our journey of equipping your child(ren) with the academic skills and character traits they will need to lead productive and satisfying lives.

Berylwood is dedicated to the business of learning. We not only believe, but know, that all children can achieve at high levels and meet the demanding content standards set by the state of California. To accomplish this, we will provide a high quality instructional program taught by very skilled teachers. Our program is based on the research in human learning and our teachers use that research to guide the creation of a nutritionally rich academic program for your children. We also know that the research is quite clear in finding that parents have a huge impact on children’s success in school. Neither a school nor a parent can achieve at these high levels alone, but working together we can.

We expect that children behave in a manner that allows themselves and others to learn without interference. This includes diligence in studying outside of the school day. The research is quite clear that students who do homework and read at home do far better in school than students who do not. This is due to not only giving the extra time necessary to master the subject areas, but also to the development of a work ethic that is increasingly important in future schooling and life outside of school. Students who do not develop this work ethic in the early years continue to struggle with the escalating demand of middle school, high school and college. The values, attitudes and study ethic developed in early years of school transfer to high success rates in later years, so please work with your child(ren) throughout their elementary years toward this goal.

On behalf of our staff, I would like to invite you to become involved at Berylwood Elementary. Please feel free to visit our school, volunteer in whatever capacity you are able to, and become an active member of our PTA, our School Site Council, and/or our English Language Advisory Council. We look forward to working with you.

This handbook has been prepared to communicate the expectations we maintain at our school. We encourage you to take the time to sit down with your child(ren) and go over these expectations together. With your support at home, we can achieve a healthy and safe learning environment for all children so that they grow both socially and academically. If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to share them with us.

We look forward to working with you toward a wonderful education for your children.

VISION STATEMENT

Berylwood Elementary School is a learning community made up of students, staff and parents, who work in partnership toward the social and academic growth of every student. We deliver an academically challenging program with the support necessary for all students to achieve at high levels. Berylwood is a diverse community with Title 1, English Language Development and Special Education students who complement our population of general education students. This diverse community interacts socially and academically in a safe and caring environment.

All children are not alike. Our staff is extremely dedicated to meeting the differing needs of each student, while maintaining high expectations for academic excellence. The YMCA and the Boys & Girls Club of Simi Valley work with us to provide an after-school care program, which was recognized as the best in Ventura County. The Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) at Berylwood is thoroughly integrated within our school community and provides meaningful activities and programs for students and parents. Working alongside our teachers, together they improve the richness of the education that Berylwood students receive.

Our curriculum is organized around the California State Standards. All instructional materials are adopted by the Simi Valley Unified School District in congruence with those standards. Student progress is assessed on a regular basis, allowing us to tailor the instructional program to better assist the student in achieving those standards, as well as reporting that progress to parents.

We welcome all to the Berylwood family.
